The Metamorphosis of the Junkyard Doors

The hunt was on to find a set or pair of doors that were to flank a buffet in a Tuscan inspired kitchen. When I came home with these, my son asked “what the heck are you gonna do with those?”

Doors before.

So, after a good scrubbing to remove years of dirt and grime, and yes, bird poop, I primed both sides, including the windows. Then I applied the base coat, did some minor repairs and then another base coat.

The goal was to still have doors that looked old, or to be politically correct *antique*, just not ugly maroon. The color scheme was taupe, gray, warm browns and copper with a verdigris. This was done by applying many layers of paints and glazes.

See, it’s starting to take shape.

The hardware was painted to look like aged copper.

Then I painted a rosette in the half-moon shape. As I’m painting, I’m imagining the history of the doors and they sorta come to life in my head.

Then, after several days of painting, sanding, painting, sanding, the doors are done. To the copper panels, I applied a few coats of wipe-on poly. To the doors, I applied a good coat of wax which adds to the ambiance

I’m going to have to do more of these. And, yes, even my son liked them when they were finished!
